Oracle Open World Conference 2017 Highlights

October 20, 2017 by Leave a comment

JavaOne and Oracle Open World Conference 2017JavaOne & Oracle OpenWorld (OOW) conference is one of the biggest and most important technology conference in the world. It hosts tens of thousands of attendees as well as millions online who want to connect, learn and explore industry trends and breakthroughs driven by IT technology. The conference offers more than 2,500 educational sessions, hundreds of demos and hands-on labs, plus exhibitions from more than 400 partners and customers from around the world.

The conference does not focus purely on databases. There are many more interesting technology areas presented from HW, OS and software development to modern IT trends like Cloud, Big Data, Blockchain, Internet of Things, Machine Learning, etc. But what about the database? Is Oracle not a pure database provider? No, it was probably long time back, but NOT ANY MORE.

Below are a few major topics that were dominating at the last OOW

Cloud

Oracle is aggressively scaling its cloud business and effectively catching-up with competitors like Amazon (AWS), Azur and Salesforce introducing at OOW17 an array of new Cloud offerings and enhancements and demonstrating its cost efficiency and unbeatable Infrastructure performance. At the same time comparing these all the way against AWS. For example, Larry Ellison (Oracle Founder & CTO) stated that Oracle Cloud would cost at least 50% less of your AWS bill and they would write this in the contract.
The recent launch of Oracle data Centers in Frankfurt supporting European Availability region can only confirm serious Oracle intention in the Cloud business. I personally think that soon only a few large Cloud providers will cover the major Cloud market that in turn will be driven mostly by Software Cloud Services (SaaS and partly PaaS). And there is a big chance that Oracle will be soon in the Cloud leaders caused by a large range of own quality software, modern Java development platform as well as own cost efficient HW, OS and Virtualization stack.

Machine learning

Kirill Loifman is DOAG 2015 conference speaker dadbm.comThe 28th edition of DOAG 2015 annual Conference + Exhibition was held November 17 – 20, 2015 in Nuremberg Conference Center. Participants had the opportunity to attend the exibition and daily lecture programs with more than 500 talks and international top speakers, plus a wide choice of workshops,  and community activities.
Interseting key notes including one with Andrew Mendelsohn, Executive Senior Vice President at Oracle, who shared the information about new developments in Oracle database 12c.
This was a great opportunity for everyone to expand the knowledge and benefit from the know-how of the Oracle community.

Thanks for all the organizers and participants.

I was speaking there also with a database related topic called:

Reduce planned database down time with Oracle technology smart

Official Abstract of my DOAG presentation:
How to design an Oracle database system to minimize planned interruptions? That depends on the requirements, goals, SLAs etc. The presentation will follow top-down approach. First we will describe major types of planned maintenance, prioritize those and then based on the system availability requirements find the best cost-effective technics to address those. A bit of planning, strategy and of course modern OS and database technics including latest Oracle 12c features will follow.

Timelines and location: Thursday, 2015-11-19, room Shanghai

The presentation consists of 3 major parts including Linux and SQL code examples:

– System downtimes and high availability basics
– Reducing planned downtime approach and methodology
– Technical part: system configurations, technics, new Oracle 12c features

See the slightly adjusted presentation material below:
– Presentation: Reduce planned database down time with Oracle technology
– Scripts: will follow

Please share your ideas, expririence or ask questions in the Comments to this post below.

From my PC to Oracle remote database at DOAG 2014

November 17, 2014 by 1 Comment

DOAG2014 Kirill Loifman is a conference speakerI’ll be speaking at German Oracle User Group (DOAG) Conference 2014 this week. The database related presentation with following title will be held in English:

Live adventure – from my PC to Oracle Remote Database

Official Abstract:
Best practices and live demo on remote database connection techniques including remote database connection setup, troubleshooting and undocumented tricks. Together with the audience we bypass a firewall, establish SSH RSA server authentication and receive DB access without an obvious user. Connect without passwords to any server this is our final goal!

Timelines and location: 19.11.2014 12:00, room Seoul

During my presentation in the interesting manner of a live demo I’ll try to explore how a trivial topic of Oracle database connection can have so many problematic areas in terms of  security, troubleshooting and user usability.

See the relevant documents below:
– Presentation: Live adventure – From my PC to Oracle remote database
– Demos: on DaDBMan YouTube channel

In case of questions please use comments below in this post.

Looking forward to seeing you all at CCN East, Nuremberg Trade Fair, 18th-20th November 2014!

..Oh yes, one more thing I forgot. In scope of the conference I was interviewed with a few questions by a DOAG representative. It was great to see myself with that interview in the DOAG Conference brochure together with the other big names of Oracle community. You can read it here in German: Die Datenbank hacken

Oracle DBaaS in Private Database Cloud workshop

April 28, 2014 by Leave a comment

Designing Database as a Service (DBaaS) in own Database Cloud is very comprehensive topic and it requires a lot of things: clear concept and strategy, solid planning, important architecture decisions, considerable involvement of different stakeholders, extra budget, etc. To start talking about this topic I’ll give my own definition of DBaaS which is a managed database service, hosted and offered by DBaaS provider on pay-per-usage basis, which provides access to own database resource with flexible on-demand system scaling capabilities. DBaaS on high level consists of three major pillars: Business, Operation and Technology and you cannot start with the most interesting one, which is certainly Technology (at least for me :).

Oracle DBaaS in Private Database Cloud workshop

DBaaS workshop in Munich with Ralf Durben and Manual Hossfeld

Last week being a part of exclusive Oracle Database Day workshop I learned and discussed the possibilities of building a DBaaS based on Private Database Cloud with best Oracle Germany experts in Munich. This time we talked exactly about DBaaS Technology and specifically about Oracle Cloud Management capabilities. With help of Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 12c Cloud Control and OEM Self Service Portal you can establish a framework for end-users to provision own DBaaS components with a few mouse clicks. In Oracle terms these DBaaS components can be the following:
